Wave of support for centre’s new name

Published 23 April 2008

DESTINATION Maryport has a new name, The Wave.

The new cultural and community centre for Maryport was given a permanent new name to echo the shape of the building and its proximity to the sea.

The building, on Irish Street, will house the needs of local groups after consultations with them.

It will be home to a heritage exhibition, performance space, cafe, gift ship and tourist information service.

The groups have helped shape the plans, staging and lights.

It will also be a space for activities which organisers hope will attract people to the town.

Mark Edwards, Leisure Services Manager for Allerdale Borough Council said: “The Wave was suggested because of the shape of the building and because of Maryport’s long association with the sea.

We are excited by what the building can do for Maryport. A lot of hard work is going in to making it something that Maryport can be proud of.
